Christ the King Sunday

Summary

It is not humans or human movements that we need to focus our energies and concentrate our hope, but rather we need to focus upon our Saviour, our King. Jesus needs to be the focus of our lives, he needs to be the at the center of our hearts. We need to seek Jesus´guidance in all that we do.  We also need to remember that Jesus does not do things in the way we would want him to, or think he should. As the people of his day found out, Jesus is not a political movement or military general, but God. God seeks and works across all of time. Godś aims and desires are in the end, all about his love for his creation, which we his beloved people are at the center of.

This good friday text has everything to do with Jesus as the King who saves us. Jesus does not save through the domination of human kind but through the domination and destruction of evil in our lives. It is a salvation that only comes by his death. It is upon his cross that we see his kingliness.  Most of the people that surrounded him that day did not understand that he was about to save them, but instead ridiculed what they saw as Jesus´failure. But in their ridicule of him, they proclaimed the truth about him. “He saved others, let him save himself !. That is of course, exactly the point of how Jesus is enacting Godś reign of mercy, by not saving himself.   In raising Jesus from the dead, God vindicated him as Messiah and Lord, not to condemn, but to reign in mercy.  Jesus´reign of mercy was not simply for that time, but for eternity.

In his death and resurrection Jesus´proclaims that the kingdom of God is here, for you and for me, and for all who will believe. Open your ears and hear the words that Jesus spoke to the second criminal and someday will also speak to you and me. “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” Jesus our King rules in mercy, today, tomorrow and forever. Thank the Lord he is our king !
