Summary
Jesus was reminding his listeners that as followers of Christ we cannot put our full trust, or our faith in human leaders, or governments or armies, or edifices, for they will fail you in some way or another. Jesus even specifically warns against those who will claim special knowledge of Jesus and his plans. He tells us not to trust them because they are false. Only the Lord knows of his return. No human leaders can be yours, or the world’s salvation. None, that role is God¨s, and only God¨s in the person and actions of Christ Jesus.
Jesus is telling us in his words today that we must simply, no matter how hard, trust in him. We do not need to fear, even if things get scary , because he is with us. He will give us the words, he will give us the actions, he will give us all that we need, to live out his love, his forgiveness and his hope in our lives.
So, we must not abandon him either, for he is all we need, and in persevering in our faith in him we will gain our souls. We must persevere, for we believe that only Jesus can create and give to us “a new heaven and a new earth”
