Summary
When the angel reveals to the shepherds who has been born in Bethlehem, the angel uses a specific title that we too often simply think of as a ‘last’ name, the angel says, “…he is Christ the Lord.”
‘Christ’ is the Greek form of the Hebrew word ‘Messiah,’ which means, ‘anointed One.’ So what the angel is telling the Hebrew shepherds is that the One sent by God has been born in their town. The shepherds all know of whom the angel is speaking, the Messiah is whom they’ve been awaiting for many long years. The Messiah is the Savior of the people, promised by God.
The great joy in this announcement for you and me is that Jesus has come for all people. This phrase, “all people” transcends race and culture, but also history and time. It is as if the angel is speaking directly to you and me when declaring, “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.”
Christ’s birth was truly a momentous moment in history and it’s a moment that still means something in the 21st century. As the angel said, he is a Savior born for you …born for us. He is a Savior, born to wrap us up in his loving arms, as he was wrapped in the arms of his mother Mary on that night so long ago. He is a Savior, born to free us from the ultimate power of sin. He is a Savior, born to lead us into relationships of forgiveness and hope. He is a Savior, born to give us what we can never earn, life with him, forever.
