You are the light

Summary

Jesus proclaims to us disciples today, “You are the light of the world.” What does this mean, “.. the light of the world”? The world is full, absolutely full of light isn´t it?

From candlelight, to neon, to incandescent, to LDED, to laser, light fills our lives. So what is Jesus talking about in the passage? What does it matter that we are light ?

Pastor explains through a personal story how a fire lit by his father shone out in the darkness as a beacon guiding him and his brother back to their camping place.

The world, the things of the world, even the people of the world , cannot fulfil us. Sure they can make us happy for a while, or even content, but to be fulfilled we need more. In the end the world leaves us empty and in the dark. We humans then find ourselves trying to navigate our way through that dark, not seeing what lies before us, and simply hoping that we might find our way.

This is when we need a light,  a beacon to guide us home, home to Jesus, and his love. That beacon, that light is our words and actions that illuminate the good news of Jesus and his gift of salvation. We need to shine the light of the gospel in the world. We are the ones who need to set that light on a lamp stand, uncovered for the world to see.

In Isaiah this morning we heard, “Is not this the fast that I choose; to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke. Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them, and not to hide yourself from your own kin ? Then your light shall break forth like the dawn..”

You see, its through our words spoken for justice, our loving actions of compassion and our lives lived for others, that the world may see and encounter the loving reality of Jesus, and come to understand that he is the true light, and in the end the worldś only hope. Jesus´gift of salvation is for the whole world, but they don´t know it even exists, that it has been given until we shine the light, so that they can see, and believe.

Let Jesus´light shine, that all may see his beacon of hope and salvation, and may come home to him
