Summary
Hearing the Gospel of Mark, Part 2
The entire Gospel of Mark is being presented in Sunday worship, from
January 12 through March 1.
Try to imagine that you don’t know much about Jesus. Maybe you have read
the Bible and heard about Jesus throughout your life. Maybe you haven’t.
Either way, try to imagine that you are hearing the message like the
first believers heard it almost two thousand years ago. A preacher has
come to tell you about Jesus – who he was, what he did, what he taught,
how people reacted to him, what happened to him.
I want to tell you about Jesus. I want you to know him.
Today the third and fourth chapters of Mark will be presented. Here are
some key passages:
All these people came to Jesus because they heard of the things he was
doing.
“I have chosen you to be with me. I will also send you out to preach,
and you will have authority to drive out demons.”
“Look! Here are my mother and my brothers!”
“Listen, then, if you have ears!”
“These are the ones who hear the message, but the worries about this
life, the love for riches, and all other kinds of desires crowd in and
choke the message, and they don’t bear fruit.”
“But other people are like seeds sown in good soil. They hear the
message, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirty, some sixty, and some
one hundred.”
“Why are you frightened? Do you still have no faith?”
But they were terribly afraid and began to say to one another, “Who is
this man? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”
